The Gift

I bask in the light

of my own awakening,

shuddering at the world

that light reveals.

The peace of darkness

shattered.

The calm of blindness

dead.

If you could see

the future,

we asked as kids,

What would you

do with that knowledge?

Stay silent,

I say now.

Stay silent.

There is no

explaining

to those who

don’t want to see.

At least the future

is not all that is

visible.

At least, there is

a greater

vision

that holds beauty

and joy,

and that, in itself,

in the hands

of my Mother,

is a place

to hold onto

peace.
